How I Made $5000 on Fiverr
I love Fiverr. For some time it’s been my bread and butter and the backbone of my income. While extremely competitive, if you can calve out your own little space to setup a shop in this bustling marketplace you’ll earn consistent income, and loyal customers.
For me, Fiverr has allowed clients to test my services and has enabled me to build long lasting, higher paying clients who are extremely satisfied with my services.
What Is Fiverr
If you havent heard of Fiverr it’s a website that has grown tremendously over the last few years. You may have even noticed a television ad or two pop up on your screens.
Fiverr is a marketplace where anyone can offer a service for $5. This may sound like small money but the beauty is that you can add Gig Extras to your orders for special features and it’s through this that you can make serious money. Fiverr has also recently introduced ‘Custom Orders’ where you can work out a price for a project and charge any agreed amount.
As you can see my average gig selling price is actually $9, not $5. This is because most orders include one of my gig extras that range from +$5-$10.
Over the years of using Fiverr I have learnt a few tips and tricks that enable me to provide an excellent service to my clients. My reviews speak for themselves, here are some of my favourite from just the last month:
Here are my top tips for earning an income on Fiverr.
Offer Something You Can Complete Efficiently
By offering a service that takes me just 5 mins I am able to complete orders quickly and efficiently. This works out to an hourly rate of $50 for working on Fiverr which isn’t too bad.
This makes it worth my time and I think many people fail at Fiverr because they offer the world and quickly realise they cannot fulfill the demand and provide a quality service. Because of this you’ll leave clients unhappy and receive negative reviews and quickly diminish any hope of getting future orders.
You have to think about how much time you can invest in one gig and whether the $4 (Fiverr takes a 20% cut) you will earn from one gig is worth it.
When I first started my website testing gig I would offer 15 mins of testing for $5. This ate up my time and sometimes I couldn’t complete the orders in time. As the orders mounted up I quickly realised the amount of time it took to complete these tests wasn’t worth the amount I was getting paid. I could earn more than $16 per hour working in an office or freelancing.
I reduced the time to 5 mins. It had a nice ring to it too, “$5 for 5 minutes of testing”. I found that reducing the time didn’t actually affect my sales. People loved the quick 5 minute overviews of their websites and I got really good at condensing my analysis and thoughts into a 5 minute limit.
Create A High Quality Video
Gigs with videos convert a lot better than those without, 220% more according to Fiverr. People like to see who is going to be working for them and you’ll notice most of the highest rated gigs have a video of the gig creator presenting their offer. A bit like mine:
Your gig video doesn’t have to be overly complicated. In fact Fiverr restrict you to just 1 minute. Use the time wisely, introduce yourself and tell the viewer what your gig has to offer.
You can do it on camera, like I did, or create a screencast or presentation. Viewers really like to see the gig in action. It let’s them know that the work is being carried out by a real person. Many people think of Fiverr as a cheap marketplace for crappy, automated services. While this may be true for some categories on fiverr, its not true for the whole marketplace.
There are a lot of talented providers on Fiverr who offer a genuine service for a bargain price of $5.
Show the viewer that your offer is genuine and excellent value for money. You will see a boost in sales from it.
Ask For Positive Feedback
There’s nothing wrong with asking your client to leave some positive feedback on your work. If you are providing a quality service they may want to do this on their own accord. However, sometimes you can nudge them in the right direction with a little reminder saying how much you appreciate a positive review.
Fortunately, Fiverr added the ‘Request Modifications’ feature which allows customers to request revisions if they are not happy with the delivered gig. This means there’s less chance of you getting burnt with a negative review. None-the-less it’s always good practice to let the customer know you want to make them happy and are available for revisions if needed.
Upsell With Extras
Established gigs are in high demand on Fiverr. Through this you can add restrictive features to your gig that can be removed by extras.
For instance, you will see many designers only supplying .jpg or .pngs of their artwork for the price of a normal gig. By purchasing a gig extra you can get the original psd or ai file of the work. Get creative with your gig extras and try to think of other ways a customer will use the product you are creating for them.
Offer those as an add-on, for instance this logo creation gig below offers a business card design service too. They know that someone getting a logo designed will also likely need a business card to go with it.
If you are creating a new gig I would advise against this method as it can be off putting to a potential customer. You have to compete with lots of competition on Fiverr and usually need to offer what the competition is not until you become established.
Be Consistent, Don’t Miss Deadlines & Communicate
To succeed on Fiverr you have to persevere. Promote your gig through social media and other channels to help get the ball rolling. Always provide a quality service, in your gig and in your communication and relationship with the customer.
Fiverr are constantly looking for quality gigs to promote. If you offer a consistent high quality customer service, unique service and can drive sales to your gig you stand a much better chance of getting noticed by the Fiverr editors. This can help massively and if you are lucky you might get a ‘Featured Seller’ status or be promoted on the front page of Fiverr.
I have been featured in numerous newsletters as well as the front page. The spike in traffic and orders is HUGE. Take a look at the screenshot below, it’s clear to see when I have bee featured on the homepage. The surge in impressions resulted in an increase in clicks and orders.
Talking to one of the admins, Lisa, she gave me a little more info into the decision process of being promoted to a featured seller and boosted to the front page of Fiverr:
Our Content Editors are constantly reviewing Gigs to help keep the content on Fiverr fresh. We’re broadening our approach to help buyers discover more unique services offered on Fiverr including offering more ways of how your Gigs are discovered. Please understand that Fiverr is very dynamic and competitive and you may want to try refresh/adjust/edit your Gig periodically.
They’re literally looking for the full package, highly original sellers who:
- Have a very high volume of sales
- Provide unique and high quality services
- Are extremely professional in delivery and communication with buyers
